Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick agreed on Monday to plead guilty in a dog-fighting case.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick agreed on Monday to plead guilty in a dog-fighting case that threatens to wreck the career of one of U.S. football's most dynamic stars.

A strong-armed quarterback and breakaway runner, the 27-year-old Vick is accused of helping to run an interstate dog-fighting enterprise known as "Bad Newz Kennels" from 2001 through April 2007.

Dogfighting, in which two dogs bred to fight are placed in a pit to attack each other for spectators' entertainment and gambling, is illegal in the United States.

Prosecutors charged that dogs sometimes fought to the death and some losing or underperforming dogs had been shot, drowned, hanged, electrocuted or killed by being slammed to the ground.

Vick had initially denied direct involvement in pit bull fights that an indictment said took place on his property in Virginia. He accepted the deal after associates agreed to cooperate with prosecutors under their own plea deals.

"Mr. Vick will be entering a plea of guilty next Monday at 10:30," U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson told a group of some 20 reporters at the federal courthouse in Richmond.

"No details of the plea agreement are publicly available at this time," added Hudson, who did not answer questions. Vick was not present, and the judge said the player would appear at the courthouse for the hearing next week.

Vick, one of the NFL's highest-paid players, could go to jail. Without a deal, the quarterback was likely to face a new indictment with more charges, legal sources had said.

Vick, the top pick in the 2001 NFL draft out of Virginia Tech, faced up to six years in prison and $350,000 in fines if convicted on all of the initial charges.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 17. The NFL, its season due to start next month, barred the three-time Pro Bowl selection from training camp after the indictment.

In a statement issued on Monday, Vick's lead attorney, Billy Martin, said "Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made.

"Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter."

The NFL on Monday condemned Vick's conduct as outlined in the charges and said it was conducting its own review. The league has the right to add a further suspension beyond any jail time Vick may have to serve.

Purnell Peace, 35, and Quanis Phillips, 28, pleaded guilty last week before Judge Hudson to one count involving the dog-fighting ring, which prosecutors say was run from Vick's property in Virginia.

The judge set sentencing for the two men on Nov. 30.

The only other defendant, Tony Taylor, 34, pleaded guilty late last month and also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the case against Vick.

Vick, a rare talent who threw for 20 touchdowns and ran for more than 1,000 yards last season for the Falcons, lost major endorsements following his indictment. Nike suspended the release of a new Michael Vick shoe that had been set to hit stores this month and Reebok stopped selling his jerseys.

He has been heavily criticized in the media and by animal rights groups.

"We totally condemn the conduct outlined in the charges, which is inconsistent with what Michael Vick previously told both our office and the Falcons. We will conclude our own review under the league's personal conduct policy as soon as possible," the NFL said in a statement.

"In the meantime, we have asked the Falcons to continue to refrain from taking action pending a decision by the (NFL)commissioner."

Facing South was one of the first media outlets to cover the case of the Jena 6 -- black youths in rural Louisiana who are facing up to 22 years in prison (thanks to an all-white jury) after getting in a schoolyard fight with white students.

This week, ColorOfChange gives us an update on the status of the case and their national campaign:

Last Tuesday, over 300 people from across the country descended on Jena: we rallied in front of the courthouse, marched through downtown Jena, and cut through a line of sheriffs to hand-deliver petitions from more than 43,000 ColorOfChange.org members to the District Attorney's office.

In a town that's 85 percent white, with a white mayor, sheriff, district attorney and trial judge, the parents of the black students who were arrested say their sons will never get a fair trial here. In conversations, they sometimes sound more exhausted than angry.

One question: If justice is blind, does that mean color blind too?

When I first heard this story, the picture that flahed through my mind was the town I grew up in. The town with the "Negroes" who lived at one side and the whites who occupied the rest. The separation was an imaginary line, for the streets did no stop.

If a "Negro" came into the white side of town for whatever reason you could literally see the fear in his eyes. It was always a he, never a she. For the whites the same rule applied.

My Grandfather lived in La., and worked for the railroad. He never mistreated anyone, never talked down to anyone. If his crew had to eat outside, or drink from an old pump, he did the same.

His boss carried a big, thick stick because he was afraid one or more of hid "Negroes" would kill him. He had reason to be fearful.I wasn't afraid of the "Negroes", but I was definitely afraid of Mr. Day.

If you think this was back in the early part of the century, you would be wrong.

I thought we had come farther. Guess not.

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Hi Susan,

It is unclear to me what Bell's past criminal record is. Two things stand out to me: that Bell was tried as an adult at age 17 and that in this trial his shoes were sought out as a weapon, because if you can't prove evidence of a weapon, then it would be a mis-trial. THis case was definitely handled the wrong way.

As far as the mayor and the residents of the small Louisiana town goes, their self-censored silence seems to tell a tale of its own.

In many places in the South justice is color blind now - some places linger though in the "old ways" and the old attitudes. The lawyer for the young man should have asked for a change in venue to give his client a more solid shot at a fair trial.

Without knowing if a past record exists its hard to have an opinion any further. But if he didn't have a record, then without being seen as an attacker, and no other evidence to point to him as an attacker, the term railroaded comes to mind.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Mar.18, 2007) (NPE) - Virginia's lead in apologizing for its role in slavery. After pressure from Lawmakers and the leadership of Atlantaâs NAACP Chapter. Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) Georgia, with the Senate leader for approved an apology resolution, he expects a similar measure will be approved in the coming weeks. âWe are working over the weekend to meet with Georgia legislators.â

The idea of an apology has gotten a cool reception from some Georgia legislators, but state Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson said he has been meeting with black leaders to craft a strategy and believes something could pass before the legislative session concludes in mid-April. NAACP Spokesperson, said âthe resolution says government-sanctioned slavery is ranks as the most horrendous of all depredations of human rights and violations of our founding ideals in our stateâs history."

Rep. Tyrone Brooks, D-Atlanta, and state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, said they expected the apology would be combined with a proposal that would permanently designate April Confederate History and Heritage Month in Georgia. Johnson declined to comment on specifics.

A committee passed the Confederate history bill this week, sending it to the full Senate. Some black leaders said they were offended by the move, given that some leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature indicated they didn't see the point of an official apology.

Johnson, a Republican, said he had been "arguing privately for awhile that Georgia ought to be at the lead and not forced into anything on the slavery issue."

"It's not that we personally, or our parents, participated in slavery, but the state of Georgia did," he said. Associated Press Writer Shannon McCaffrey contributed to this story

Black Republican Will Challenge Cynthia McKinney

(CNSNews.com) - A little known African American woman announced Thursday that she will try to unseat Georgia Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who has been mired in controversy since she struck a U.S. Capitol policeman in the chest with her closed fist.

Catherine Davis, a human resources manager who has never held elected office, said she is running because McKinney's "dismal legislative record and her outrageous behavior are an embarrassment to the hard-working folks in my district." McKinney represents Georgia's 4th Congressional District.

Davis is conservative. She favors a strict approach to immigration reform - the immediate securing of the borders and deportation of illegal residents, privatizing Social Security, Health Savings Accounts, school vouchers and the Fair Tax, which would eliminate the federal income tax and establish a federal sales tax.

McKinney was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992 to represent Georgia's heavily Democratic 11th District. The district was redrawn by order of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1995 and McKinney was elected in the new, but still heavily Democratic 4th District in 1996. She lost her seat in 2002 when she was beaten in a Democratic primary, but when the winner then attempted a bid for the U.S. Senate in 2004, McKinney recaptured her old seat.

Davis said she believes the district is ready for change after the controversy that has swirled around McKinney.

A spokesman for McKinney did not return calls requesting comment Thursday.

Anna Nicole Smith, a former model who once starred in her own reality television show, died Thursday.

Smith, 39, was rushed to a hospital in Hollywood, Florida, after she was found unresponsive in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, officials said. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Smithâââ‰â¢s death comes almost five months after her 20-year-old son died in the Bahamas.

TMZ has obtained a photo of the inside of Anna Nicole Smith's refrigerator taken after she died, and the contents are shocking on several levels. TMZ has 100% verified the authenticity of this photo.

Prince Frederick von Anhalt, 64, husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, tells the AP that he had a decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and that he might be the father of her 5-month old daughter, Dannielynn.

Prescription drugs were found in Anna Nicole's room. The pills were in Howard K. Smith's name!

A judge today refused emergency DNA testing to determine the paternity of Dannielynn, but ordered her remains preserved until a full hearing on February 20.

It appears that Anna and Howard K. Stern were set to be legally married (their last marriage, it turns out, was not legally binding) in the Bahamas on February 23.

The couple were both in Florida yesterday to buy a 39-foot boat they planned to take back to the Bahamas.

Anna Nicole's mother, Vergie Smith, is headed out to the Bahamas right now to ask a Bahamian judge for legal custody of Dannielynn.

Just in case you're bored so far, Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband of twenty years, Prince Frederick von Anhalt, is now saying that he might be the father of Dannielynn.

The autopsy is currently in progress. Press conference scheduled for later today. We'll have those details when they come.

Cosby also reports the former Playmate had also been prescribed over 10 different types of pain medication, and may have been taking excessive amounts because she developed a tolerance to the effects.

In addition, Cosby's sources tell her that Anna Nicole was found by a member of her staff -- unresponsive and nude in her bed, with a sheet pulled over her face.

Death from cosmetic plastic surgeries occurs in one out of 57,000 cases, per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Two million plastic surgeries were performed in the United States in 2005.

Adverse reactions to surgery could become serious; there are numerous documented cases of seizures, heart attacks and high fevers leading to death. Recent published research shows that inflammation caused by common respiratory and urinary tract infections like bronchitis, pneumonia and cystitis, may contribute to in increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and the greatest risk is in the earliest stages of infection.

If Anna did have a recent cosmetic procedure, and she exhibited "flu like symptoms" over the last few days, it's quite possible that the star died of a massive infection, perhaps complicated by an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

Out of the blue in the Washington Post today, former US Ambassador to the UN and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young decries America's "excessive Puritanism" and makes a plea to give the beleaguered World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz just one more chance.

One can almost imagine Young on the verge of breaking into tears as he grovels for one of the master architects of the Iraq War.

Andrew Young has done many distinguished things in his life, and I don't want to take anything from him on those fronts. But seriously, Ambassador Young has some chutzpah to counsel the rest of America on what lines should and should not be crossed -- and what should be forgiven and not in our public leaders.

One reader remarked to me this morning that "Andrew Young never saw a well-financed cause he did not love."
